Scope & Mission

The School Commission works with the faculty, families, parish, and community to provide a positive, Catholic values based environment for grades K-8 education, designed to develop lifelong learning skills in an environment that emphasizes Catholic faith traditions and service to others, providing for the whole student's needs.

The St. Pius X School Commission:

What Does The Commission Do
?
We meet with the school principal monthly during the school year to make policies having to do with broad issues like admissions and changing the kindergarten schedule.

We assist the principal when special projects arise that require manpower. For example, we assisted with preparation of the Performance-Based Accreditation report.

We conducted a major part of the principal search when the current principal was hired. The principal annually reports her goals to the School Commission. We provide feedback on that and the success of the previous year's goals.

We act as a "sounding board" for the principal, the PTO and the School Advisory Committee.

We provide feedback to the principal, the Parish Council and the Finance Committee during the annual budget process. What does the Commission not do?

We do not function like a public school Board of Education. Therefore, we do not oversee or hire and fire staff, make decisions about which textbooks to use, become involved in disciplinary matters involving specific individuals and so on. In other words, the school Administrator makes those decisions based on his/her professional training and expertise.

What qualities should I possess to be a Commission member?

You should be interested in working cooperatively with others while looking at the "big picture" in order to make wise and informed policies for the school. What is the composition of the School Commission?

Normally, 2 at-large members are added to the Commission each year. They join a PTO representative, a teacher representative, the school administrator, the existing at-large membership (including the chair, vice-chair and secretary) and a representative from the School Advisory Board and serve a two-year term. When extra work is anticipated (e.g., when the Performance-Based Accreditation report is due) a larger number of at-large members may be sought. The total membership is usually 10-12 parishioners.

How can I become a member?

By attending the School Commission discernment night held in May of each year and discerning among those present to joint the Commission. This is done through a sharing of information about what the Commission does and through prayerful reflection about one's call to be on the Commission.

School Commission Activities
The School Commission works closely with the following groups:

Parent Teacher Organization

PTO works cooperatively to enhance SPX's commitment to the total education of their children. Fund raisers, such as Market Day and grocery certificates, are held to offset expenses that parish and archdiocesan budgets do not cover. Volunteers are always welcome.

St. Pius-X School

Our parish school, serving the academic, social, spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of our children in grades K-8. Volunteers are always needed to read stories, copy papers, and fix skinned knees, ...to name a few!
